노래방 is not a karaoke bar. It's a private room, a tambourine, a microphone, and your friends. Korea made karaoke better — here's what to expect and what to say.
Someone in your group suggests 노래방 after dinner.
Everyone immediately agrees.
This is how most Korean nights end. Not at a club, not at a bar — but in a small, padded room with two microphones, a tambourine, a screen full of song choices, and the kind of freedom that only exists when no one outside the door can hear you.
노래방 is private karaoke. And once you've tried it, the open-stage version feels strange.
The word
노래방
Romanizationnoraebang
Meaningprivate karaoke room
💡 노래 (norae) means song. 방 (bang) means room. So 노래방 is simply 'song room.' Not a bar, not a stage — a private room rented by the hour, just for your group.
The vocabulary
마이크
Romanizationmaikeu
Meaningmicrophone
💡 There are usually two. An unspoken rule: one person sings, the other holds the spare and waits for the chorus.
탬버린
Romanizationtaembeorin
Meaningtambourine
💡 Every 노래방 has one. You shake it while someone else sings. It's optional in theory. In practice, it is mandatory.
18번
Romanizationsippalpon
Meaningyour signature song
💡 Literally 'number 18' — a term from old Japanese theater meaning a performer's best act. Your 18번 is the song you always sing, that everyone expects from you.
점수
Romanizationjeomssu
Meaningscore
💡 The machine gives you a score after each song (out of 100). Getting 100점 (100 points) triggers a special animation. It's a big deal.
코인노래방
Romanizationkoin-noraebang
Meaningcoin karaoke booth
💡 Small solo booths where you pay per song (usually 500–1,000 won per song). No need to book a room. Perfect for 혼코노 (karaoke alone).
애프터
Romanizationaepeuteo
Meaningafter-party / the next stop
💡 Short for 'after.' After 노래방, someone suggests an 애프터 — another round somewhere else. Korean nights have multiple acts.

Cultural note
노래방 is built on one idea: there is no audience to judge you.
In a karaoke bar, strangers watch. In a 노래방, only your friends are there — and they're too busy picking their next song to critique yours. This makes 노래방 surprisingly freeing. Bad singers come. People who would never sing in public come. Office colleagues come right after a formal dinner.
It's also one of the most democratic Korean social experiences. There's no guest list, no dress code, no minimum spend. You rent a room, you sing, you leave. Everyone gets a turn. The tambourine is shared.
If someone asks where the night is going next and suggests 노래방, say yes.
