찜질방 — The Korean Spa That's More Than a Spa

찜질방 is part sauna, part nap room, part social hall. Koreans use it to relax, recover, bond, and sometimes just sleep for the night. Here's everything you need to know.

찜질방 — The Korean Spa That's More Than a Spa

It's late. You missed the last subway. Or maybe you just don't want to go home yet.

In most cities, your options are limited.

In Korea, you find a 찜질방.

You pay around 10,000–15,000 won. You get a locker, a towel, a set of shorts and a t-shirt, and access to a building where you can sweat in a hot room, soak in a bath, eat eggs, lie on a heated floor, and fall asleep watching TV — surrounded by strangers doing exactly the same thing.

찜질방 is not just a spa. It's a second home.

The word

찜질방
Romanizationjjimjilbang
MeaningKorean sauna / heated spa facility
💡 찜질 means to apply heat for health (like a steam or heat compress). 방 means room. So 찜질방 is literally a 'heat room' — but it's much more than that.

The vocabulary

사우나
Romanizationsauna
Meaningsauna room
💡 The hot dry rooms inside a 찜질방. Temperatures range from around 60°C to 90°C. There are usually multiple rooms at different heats.
Romanizationtang
Meaningbath / soaking pool
💡 The large hot water pools in the bathing area. Usually gender-separated. 온탕 (warm), 냉탕 (cold), 열탕 (hot). You go in without clothes.
때밀이
Romanizationttaemiri
Meaningbody scrub service
💡 A professional scrub where an attendant removes dead skin using a special exfoliating mitt (이태리 타올). Very rough, very effective, very Korean.
이태리 타올
RomanizationItalian ta-ol
MeaningKorean exfoliating mitt
💡 Despite the name, this is entirely Korean. A rough cloth mitt used to scrub off dead skin. You can buy one at any convenience store or supermarket.
찜질복
Romanizationjjimjilbok
Meaningthe uniform (shorts + t-shirt)
💡 Given to all visitors at the entrance. Usually a single color — orange, grey, or pink. Everyone wears the same thing. It's part of the equalizing experience.
수면실
Romanizationsumyeonsil
Meaningsleeping room
💡 A dark, quiet room where people sleep on mats. Very common to stay overnight. Bring earplugs — the snoring is real.

Cultural note

찜질방 culture is deeply social. Families come together — grandparents, parents, kids, all in matching shorts. Couples come on dates. Friends come after a night of drinking to recover before the morning.

There's a specific snack you almost always eat at a 찜질방: 맥반석 계란 (maekbansok gyeran) — eggs slow-roasted on a heated stone. Brown on the outside, soft inside. They taste like nothing else. And 식혜 (sikhye), a cold sweet rice drink, is the classic thing to sip while sitting on the hot floor.

If you see someone rolling their towel into a horn shape on their head — that's a 양머리 (sheep's head). A 찜질방 tradition. Everyone does it. No one questions it.
