배달 — How Korea Became the World's Delivery Capital

In Korea, you don't go out to eat — you bring the restaurant home. Delivery here is faster, cheaper, and more obsessive than anywhere else on earth.

배달 — How Korea Became the World's Delivery Capital

It's raining outside. You're tired. You don't want to cook.

In most countries, you might make some toast.

In Korea, you open an app and within 30 minutes a full restaurant meal arrives at your door — sometimes with side dishes, real plates, and a bag to return them in.

This is 배달. And in Korea, it's not a convenience. It's a way of life.

The word

배달
Romanizationbaedal
Meaningdelivery
💡 Used for food delivery specifically. If someone says 배달 시켜요, they mean ordering food to be brought to you — not sending a package.

The vocabulary

배달 앱
Romanizationbaedal aep
Meaningdelivery app
💡 The two biggest are 배민 (Baemin / 배달의민족) and 요기요 (Yogiyo). Most Koreans have at least one on their phone.
배달의민족
RomanizationBaedal-ui Minjok
MeaningBaemin — Korea's #1 delivery app
💡 The name literally means 'the people of delivery' — a play on 배달민족 (Baedal Minjok), an old term meaning 'the Korean people'. A very Korean joke.
배달비
Romanizationbaedal-bi
Meaningdelivery fee
💡 Usually 2,000–4,000 won per order. Many apps now offer subscription plans (like 배민클럽) to waive fees.
최소 주문 금액
Romanizationchoesoː jumun geumaek
Meaningminimum order amount
💡 Most restaurants require a minimum order, usually around 12,000–15,000 won. A common pain point for solo diners.
픽업
Romanizationpikeop
Meaningpickup / takeout
💡 Some apps let you choose 포장 (pojang, packaging/takeout) instead of delivery — useful if the restaurant is nearby.

Cultural note

Korea has one of the highest delivery rates per person in the world. This didn't happen by accident. Koreans work long hours, live in dense apartment buildings (easy for riders to navigate), and have high expectations for speed and accuracy. The delivery infrastructure here — motorcycles weaving between traffic, apps with real-time tracking, restaurants built specifically for delivery — is uniquely Korean.

There's even a word for food you order late at night: 야식 (yasik). Ordering 야식 at midnight — often ramyeon or fried chicken — is a completely normal Korean experience. No judgment. Just food at the door.
